ABOUT ME

> I am an intermedia artist with a practice that weaves together oil painting, new media, and installation art. My multimedia works examine how digital and analog systems mediate and condition human perception and lived experiences. Growing up in rural southwest Ohio, I spent my childhood drawing and my adolescence writing alternative rock songs with my band July For Kings. I now live in Pullman, Washington, the ultimate liminal space, with my partner Jiemei Lin and our five-year-old son. I am also the founder of Pullman Arts Foundation, a nonprofit formed with the goal of helping artists in my town.

ARTIST STATEMENT

~ % The tension between a digitally networked, screen- based experience of the world and a physical, more tactile experience has never been more acute. My works reflect this fragmented reality by combining painting on canvases with screens, tablets and other electronics and materials. My work is both a celebration of the unexpected creative possibilities within our technological and art historical milieu, and a lamentation for our collective loss of human agency and embodied experience as more and more of our decisions are influenced by unknowable algorithms and artificial intelligence. My hope is that by looking at painting as a form of media technology we might see contemporary forms of media more objectively and more critically.

FOOTER

~ % I have to say I am very impressed that you have scrolled all the way to the bottom of this page. Aza Raskin invented the endless scroll and he is deeply sorry about it. I too, feel that webpages should end. So consider this a compromise. It could keep going, but my art would get worse and worse as we go back in time. Ha!

Anyway, if you want to know more about me I would encourage you again to follow me on Instagram where the scrolling never ends, or on Substack , where I have a chance to slow down and reflect and write. If you're interested in exhibiting or collecting my work please reach out. Again, to contact me via email, my email address is my firstname dot my lastname and then the letter that comes after F and then the word mail and then finally a dot com.

I made this website myself with html. It is inspired by the MS DOS "Blue Screen of Death". If you know you know.

Thanks again for visiting and keep in touch.

Yours,
~ Joe
