I am an artist currently living in the Inland Northwest, Pullman WA, formerly Cincinnati, OH. I am currently pursuing several bodies of work exploring objects and archives with oil paint, web technologies, digital prints, performance, installation, etc.

I am an intermedia artist living and working in eastern Washington state. I grew up in Ohio where I had a short career as a recording artist before returning to the visual arts. My visual art now makes use of a diverse background in web design, music and painting to make works that are part-painting and part-new media installations. FA 321 Intermediate Painting students were asked t

FA 321 Intermediate Painting students were asked to create a painting by borrowing the approach of a well-known innovative contemporary or modern abstract painter, or an artist working within the tradition of abstract painting but utilizing other materials. Students built their own stretchers, created sketches and installed their own exhibition. It was great to have grad students Camille Comer and Abby Nnaji’s works in the show this semester as it gave intermediate students a chance to reflect on the materiality of painting and the African roots of abstraction, respectively. Sorry didn’t have time to talk about every piece!

Yesterday I made the trip to Pasco, WA again for an artist talk. Caught the beginning of an icy cold snowstorm getting home last night but made it. I am so grateful for Columbia Basin College students being so engaged and asking great questions (Are AI Artists “real” artists? What about my son’s future engagement with art and technology? Is there ever a big moment when you know you’ve made the right decisions in life?) It has been a wild week installing this show and also beginning the semester here in Pullman. But hey, less than two weeks into 2024 I’ve done a lot already. I am headed to the beach until 2025! 😎🏝️(j/k)   Infrastructure at Esvelt Gallery, Pasco WA

Most images in the world today are “read” at a scale of three inches: the width of a smartphone screen. That caterpillar size and split-second speed leaves us in a state of unconscious longing—longing for something physical, for something lasting and for something that has a relationship to our bodies rather than our eyes. that feeling of being in a state of suspended dissatisfaction is sold as time to advertisers. it’s a major time trade and a raw deal. perhaps the greatest misuse of human ingenuity, attention and time in the history of the world. Right? (Even worse than the bedazzling craze in the early 2000’s which I participated in). the role of artists is, I think, increasingly to fight against this condition and to assert the value of our bodies by asserting the value of objects and experiences that might engage our bodies (or that formerly engaged our bodies). Life shouldn’t be so... optical. images shouldn’t be so small and so cheap.

I was making work with phones in 2018 then kind of got away from it. I’m going to try and find a way back into some “smart phone paintings” whatever that means (while keeping my larger combine things going). Been playing with dummy phones and the thumb stroke—the unfortunate and ridiculous contemporary gesture. Today I was thinking about making a gigantic fake thumb to make paintings with. 😂 What’s wrong with me? I haven’t made much progress on Chinese in the l

I haven’t made much progress on Chinese in the last few years but I have maintained the very basics thanks to somewhat regular practice sessions with an online tutor (we don’t speak much Chinese at home). An elementary proficiency is vital in China where few people (relative to the general population) are comfortable speaking English. Last year I was really beginning to lose motivation, so this opportunity to exhibit in Shenzhen came at a great time. If you are interested in learning Mandarin DM me I love to talk about it!
